The Toyota Avanza is a car produced in Indonesia by the Daihatsu manufacturer, which is also marketed by Daihatsu under the name Daihatsu Xenia. The first generation of this car was launched during the 2004 Gaikindo Auto Expo and sold 100,000 units that year. The name "Avanza" comes from the Italian and Spanish avanzato/avanza, which means upgrade.
First launched in Indonesia, the Toyota Avanza is only available in two models: 1.3 E and 1.3 G with manual transmission only. Since its inception, the Toyota Avanza has become one of the best-selling cars in Indonesia to date.
In 2004, the Toyota Avanza 1.3 S with automatic transmission was launched to the market. The 1.3 liter engine was upgraded to use VVT-i (K3-VE) technology and individual direct ignition coils. The big change in this Toyota Avanza version occurs in the interior to change the appearance of the air conditioner which is equipped with an odometer and digital tripmeter air circulation feature which is located next to the speedometer and tachometer. The braking system is improved by including anti-lock ABS. The release of this version is also designated as a "test market" for the planned development of all Avanza-Xenia VVT-i and Automatic transmission editions. This special edition comes with automatic transmission only.
Only 2000 units of the Toyota Avanza type S were produced. A new exterior color (black) was added at the same time. And it is equipped with braking technology. In mid-2006, the New Avanza-Xenia was launched with changes in appearance, accessories, performance improvements and a new engine with VVT-i variable valve adjustment technology that complements all versions/variants (facelift). At the end of 2006 the New Avanza 1.5 S was also launched which is the most complete version with an engine capacity of 1,500 cc VVT-i and equipped with rear parking sensors, ABS braking technology and 15" aluminum rims. by Toyota Avanza has the exact same specifications as the Toyota Rush. Toyota Avanza 1.5 S is available in manual and automatic transmission variants, while the automatic transmission on the Toyota Avanza G and E was only launched in 2009.
The overall model change (full model change) was carried out on November 9, 2011 which began with the second generation known as the All New Toyota Avanza. The emergence of a new variant of Veloz (derived from English, Velocity which means speed) became the top variant (top of the line) replacing the S variant. On June 9, 2014, Toyota also presented the Avanza Luxury as the most luxurious variant of the Toyota Avanza. The first facelifted version of the second generation Toyota Avanza known as Grand New Avanza and Grand New Veloz was launched on July 24, 2015.Production of this car, the second facelift of the second generation Avanza and Xenia began on January 1, 2019 at the Karawang factory and the second facelift version of the second generation Toyota Avanza and Xenia was launched on January 15, 2019 at the Fairmont Hotel, Central Jakarta.
The Toyota Avanza is also marketed in a number of Asia Pacific countries such as Malaysia (Version 1.5 G equipped with SRS Airbags), Thailand, and the Philippines, in addition to being marketed in South Africa and Mexico. While the first generation Daihatsu Xenia is also sold in the People's Republic of China with a configuration of 1,300 cc 4 cylinder engine capacity such as the Toyota Avanza 1.3.
Both the Toyota Avanza and Daihatsu Xenia, both use the same chassis and body base and are produced by Astra Daihatsu under the supervision of Toyota-Astra Motor. For the 1,300 cc engine (K3-VE), the Toyota Avanza and Daihatsu Xenia use the same engine. The difference between the two is in the completeness of additional features, interior quality and variety of accessories. The first generation Toyota Avanza was also exported to Malaysia in completely knock down (CKD) form which was assembled by the Perodua Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd. As for the second generation, Toyota imports completely (completely built up/CBU) from Indonesia.
Currently, Toyota Avanza specializes in 2 types of engine capacity (4 cylinders 1,300 cc and 4 cylinders 1,500 cc), while the twin model from Toyota Avanza, namely Daihatsu Xenia uses 2 types of lower capacity engines (3 cylinders 1,000 cc and 4 cylinders 1,300 cc).
